Glossary · Testing and assessment
VAPT pairs a broad sweep for known flaws with a deep attempt to exploit them.
A combined security engagement: a vulnerability assessment that finds and ranks known weaknesses, followed by penetration testing that tries to exploit them.

In plain words
A combined security engagement: a vulnerability assessment that finds and ranks known weaknesses, followed by penetration testing that tries to exploit them.
The vulnerability assessment half uses scanners and manual checks to list weaknesses across many assets. The penetration testing half picks the promising ones and tries to use them, showing what an attacker could reach. Together they give breadth and depth in one report.
Spelled out: Vulnerability Assessment and Penetration Testing.
02 · Why it matters
Why it matters
Who cares about this, and what depends on it.
The term is widely used in India, in tenders, regulator circulars and customer contracts. A buyer who asks for a "VAPT report" usually wants both halves; a scan export alone will not satisfy them. Some buyers, often in government and regulated sectors, also ask that the tester be on CERT-In's empanelled list of auditing organisations. There is no standard "VAPT certificate": what you receive is a report, and sometimes a short letter summarising scope, dates and status, which you can share where the full report is too sensitive.
03 · Where you meet it
Where you will meet it
The documents, meetings and reports where it appears.
- Tenders and vendor onboarding forms
- A requirement to submit a recent VAPT report for the application or infrastructure in scope.
- Regulated-sector directions
- Banking, securities and insurance regulators in India expect periodic testing of systems; the instrument decides frequency and form.
- SOC 2 and ISO 27001 programmes
- VAPT reports used as evidence for vulnerability management and system monitoring controls.
04 · An example
A worked example
An illustration, not a real client.
Illustrative: a manufacturing ERP vendor answering an insurer
An insurer onboarding an ERP vendor asks for a VAPT report on the hosted application and its internet-facing servers. The vendor's file holds only a quarterly scan export with four hundred lines. The insurer rejects it. The vendor commissions a VAPT: the assessment phase trims the list to real, ranked issues, and the testing phase shows that an exposed admin console accepts a default password. The vendor fixes it, gets a retest, and shares a summary letter with the insurer.
05 · Easy to mix up
Easy to mix up with
Neighbouring terms that mean something different.
- Vulnerability scan
- An automated check only. It is an input to the assessment half of VAPT, not the whole of it.
- Penetration testing
- The exploitation half alone. Many testers include an assessment step anyway; VAPT makes both explicit.
- Security audit
- A review of policies, processes and controls against a standard. VAPT tests technical exposure directly.
06 · What to do
What to do with it
Practical steps, and the guides that go deeper.
- Ask the buyer what they need: scope, frequency, whether a CERT-In empanelled tester is required, and whether a summary letter will do.
- List the assets in scope: web apps, APIs, mobile apps, external IPs, internal networks, cloud configuration.
- Agree rules of engagement, then plan remediation and a retest.
- Keep each report with its retest result and the date, since buyers ask how recent it is.

Questions about VAPT
Does the tester need to be CERT-In empanelled?
Only if your buyer or regulator requires it.
CERT-In publishes a list of empanelled auditing organisations. Some government bodies and regulated entities require that their vendors' audits come from that list; many private buyers do not. Ask before you commission the work, and check the current list yourself.
Is VAPT the same as a VA and a PT bought separately?
In content, roughly yes.
VAPT is a label, not a standard. What matters is that the report shows the assessment coverage, the exploitation attempts, the evidence for each finding and the retest. Read the method section rather than the title.

- Vulnerability scanAn automated check of hosts, applications or cloud settings against a database of known weaknesses, producing a list of likely issues ranked by severity.
- RetestA focused follow-up in which the tester repeats the steps behind each reported finding to confirm whether the fix holds, is partial or has failed.
