Glossary · ISO and management systems
An ISMS turns security from a one-off project into a routine the business keeps running.
The policies, risk decisions, controls, owners and review cycle an organisation uses to manage information security as an ongoing system.

In plain words
The policies, risk decisions, controls, owners and review cycle an organisation uses to manage information security as an ongoing system.
Most companies already do some security: a firewall here, a password rule there. An ISMS is what ties those pieces into one loop. You decide what you are protecting, judge the risks, pick controls, give each one an owner, and check on a schedule whether it all still works.
Spelled out: Information Security Management System.
02 · Why it matters
Why it matters
Who cares about this, and what depends on it.
Buyers who ask for ISO 27001 are really asking whether you have a working ISMS, because the certificate is issued against the system, not against a list of tools. For a founder, the ISMS is also the thing that survives staff turnover: when the person who set up the cloud console leaves, the decisions, owners and evidence are written down and somebody else picks them up. An auditor from an accredited certification body will look for signs the loop actually turns: dated risk reviews, internal audit reports, and leadership meetings that changed something.
03 · Where you meet it
Where you will meet it
The documents, meetings and reports where it appears.
- The ISO 27001 clauses 4 to 10
- Each clause describes one part of the system, from context and scope through to improvement. Annex A sits beside them as the control menu.
- The scope statement
- The first page of the ISMS: which teams, products, sites and systems are inside the boundary.
- Customer security questionnaires
- Questions such as "Do you operate a formal security programme?" are usually asking about an ISMS.
- The certification audit
- Stage 1 reads the design of the system; Stage 2 tests whether it runs as designed.
04 · An example
A worked example
An illustration, not a real client.
Illustrative: a 40-person logistics software firm in Pune
The firm has good engineers and decent tooling, but every security decision lives in someone's head. It writes a scope covering its route-planning product and the AWS account behind it, keeps a risk register of twelve risks, picks controls for each, and names an owner per control. Every quarter the CTO and the operations head spend an hour on what changed. A year later, when a key engineer resigns, the incoming lead reads the register and the last review minutes and knows exactly which controls she now owns. That continuity is the ISMS doing its job.

- ISO/IEC 27001
- The standard that says what a good ISMS must contain. The ISMS is the system you run; ISO 27001 is the yardstick it is audited against.
- A security tool or platform
- Software can hold your register and evidence, but the ISMS is the decisions and routines, not the product that stores them.
06 · What to do
What to do with it
Practical steps, and the guides that go deeper.
- Write a one-page scope that names the products, locations and teams inside the boundary.
- Start a risk register with owners, even if it holds only ten entries.
- Put a recurring leadership review in the calendar and keep short minutes of what was decided.
- Map the controls you already run before buying anything new.

Questions about ISMS
Can a small company run an ISMS?
Yes. The system scales down.
Nothing in the idea requires a large team. A small company can run an ISMS with a short policy set, a modest risk register, and two or three people sharing ownership, as long as the review cycle actually happens and leaves records.
Do we need certification to have an ISMS?
No. Certification is optional proof.
You can run an ISMS without ever being audited. Certification by an accredited certification body is how you show outsiders that it meets ISO 27001. Auditify helps build and assess the system; the certificate comes from the certification body.
